Worldwide Campagne

Red Bull Cliff Diving was a global campaign that employed several different approaches which resulted in an individualized motif of image for the individual characteristics of each single event. The punchline of our briefing pretty much came down to, “ This is pretty crazy shit” – Shout outs to Kastner and Partners’ creative director Thomas Gessner for another challenging project.

Worldwide Campagne

Our starting point was to first do some sort of approximate high drive ourselves . So wea all gathered at public swimming pool, climbed to the high diving platform, and all stared frozen in fear of the ten meter drop – which is not even a third of the actual height of what real cliff divers do. We all gathered together in our new speedos, frozen in hesitation as 10 year-olds made fun of us repeatedly jaunting passed and diving in zero hesitation or sense of mortality.

The Perspective

This traumatic visceral experience only strengthened appreciation and from that the concepts of our campaign came to fruition. Our aim was to articulate the individual’s subjective experience during the jump. I believe reality is always a rather subjective experience and exaggeration is part of our job to describe and reinterpret this subjectivity into the language of aesthetics. For this reason, we went all the way! The entire landscape was created in 3-D so we could easily shift perspectives. The final poster was made from more than 500 hundred different images.

Cliff Diving History

Daredevil Act

Cliff diving is perhaps one of the most direct of extreme sports. Its origin come from Oplymic high diving, only daredevil modification demands that the diver jumps from 15 meters above the tallest high diving platform. Cliff divers travel the world seeking one thrill after the next, one of the most famous divers in Acapulco leapt from 26 meters, roughly the height of an eight- story building!

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2013 will follow the traditional high diving format in a mix of the rules from FINA and HDA. Divers hand in their four-planned dives the day before the first day of competition – dives shall consist of two required dives of a fixed degree of difficulty of 3.8 and two optional dives assigned with certain degree of difficulty computed from the HDA (High Diving Alliance) table – They are scored by five high-diving judges. Images of famous landmarks throughout the world were re-contextualized in completely different environments. Due tot he massive scale of these posters we were required that an enormous amount of time was to be put in the tiniest of details to create this precise aesthetic.

Since Red Bull planned posters in the size of entire buildings we decided to really create the scenery from scratch in a 3-D program so we didn’t have to worry about the scales in the first place.

Famous landmarks were captured but found themselves in a completely different environment. Those huge posters motivated us to put an enormous amount of time in the tiniest details of our work to create this perfect aesthetic.
